Track 03-Neurological Disorders

Track 04-Clinical Neurophysiology

Clinical neurophysiology is the type of medical specialty that deals with the studies of central and peripheral nervous systems through the recording of bioelectrical activity, whether spontaneous or stimulated. It includes both research regarding the pathophysiology alongside with clinical methods used to diagnose diseases involving both central and peripheral nervous systems. Examinations within the clinical neurophysiology field are not limited to tests conducted during a laboratory. It is thought of as an extension of a neurologic consultation. Tests that are conducted are concerned with measuring the electrical functions of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves in the limbs and muscles. In these cases, untreated survival usually amounts to only a few months, and survival with current radiation and chemotherapy treatments may extend that time from around a year to a year and a half, possibly two or more, depending on the patient's condition, immune function, treatments used, and the specific type of malignant brain neoplasm.

A brain tumor is a collection, or mass, of abnormal cells in brain. Any growth inside such a restricted space can cause problems. Brain tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign). When benign or malignant tumors grow, they can cause the pressure inside the skull to increase. This can cause brain damage, and it can be life-threatening.

Stroke (also known as brain stroke or cerebrovascular accident) is a medical condition where the blood supply to a portion of the brain decreases or gets severely interrupted. It is a medical emergency wherein the cells of the brain start dying within minutes of being deprived of nutrients and oxygen due to the restriction of blood supply. The inability of brain cells (neurons) to regenerate results in permanent damage and irreversible consequences. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. A stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can reduce brain damage and other complications.

Neurophysiology is a branch of physiology and neuroscience that is concerned with the study of the functioning of the nervous system. The primary tools of basic neurophysiological research include electrophysiological recordings, such as patch clamp, voltage clamp, extracellular single unit recording and recording of local field potentials, as well as some of the methods of calcium imaging, optogenetics, and molecular biology.
